The Bar Survey- Can more than one lesbian bar survive? Faces will RE-OPEN on Feb 29th 2008, our longest standing lesbian bar in the central Florida area. Over the years, Faces outlived the opening of other lesbian bars, and still stood in its old and decrepit building long after those bars closed. Southern became a nice alternative, although primarily a men’s bar, they opened up to the women, in efforts to bring our entire community closer. Honestly, one night per week where women can gather is what some complain as simply not enough, and no place to really call “home.” No bar will ever replace Faces or Sue Hannah, but hopefully, someone can carry on the tradition of providing the little bit of community we once had.
Then, of course, you have Legacy, which shot itself in the foot from the start because of its lack of being able to offer the very thing Faces always did, a sense of community and feeling welcome. Legacy is trying, but whether they opened because of opportunity or to actually forward a “Legacy” of Faces, we will never really know and/or will they become yet another bar that FACES outlived even though it's now closed?
So the question remains, can more than one lesbian bar survive? There are several men’s bars in the Orlando area, about 7 or 8 bars, that get the support, so why not more than one lesbian bar anyways? Let’s open the field, support every lesbian bar when we can and because we feel welcomed, because in the end it leaves the community with more options, and that is always a good thing.
Another question is, are there lesbians out there that don’t go out anymore because of the current choices or lack thereof? Is it because of the smoke? Because of the lack of a dance club style, or a lounge setting to just meet and greet everyone in the community? If yet another bar opened, what WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE? What activities would you participate in? How can we use what seems to be the traditional setting of a bar to create that sense of community again that seems to have fallen away?
Lesboinfo.com would like to answer these questions with your help. The lesboinfo.com project wants to do the one thing it seems no one has done, and that is actually hearing FROM YOU THE COMMUNITY, on your opinions such as this survey, and also to provide a local forum for you to pose your questions or explore any of the local lesbian issues. Be sure to click out the FORUM link to the left and explore.
Thank you in advance for your participation, check out our website, participate in the surveys, post your opinion in the forum, ask questions, provide answers, or anything non-offensive you wish to do, but whatever you do, DO SOMETHING TO HELP UNITE OUR LOCAL LESBIAN COMMUNITY BECAUSE YOUR INPUT IS WHAT WILL HELP SHAPE OUR COMMUNITY FOR THE YEARS TO COME.
